Stay Strong, Kittens

Recently, very recently, a few kittens have been attacked by raccoon/ musang buah (I really don't know),

I really have no idea what you call that creature but from what I googled, it's musang buah. I mean it can look like raccoon too but I don't even know whether we have raccoon in Malaysia but this animal is so dangerous and vicious. It killed my kittens more than once.

Anyways, at my hostel, specifically my block, there's one female cat with three kittens and another male teenager cat, which I assumed to be the senior batch of the female's cat production. On Thursday, last week, I heard the sound of cat fighting and went out to stop it. Unfortunately, it wasn't cat fighting. It was the musang buah hugging one of the kittens tightly but I showed up in front of the Musang and the kitten, it ran away and drop the kitten into the partition between the drain covers. The kitten fell, leaving some blood and flesh ( I am seriously not exaggerating) around the concrete drain covers.

I went to the mother cat to calm her down because she was so traumatized, meowing for her kitten. As I was going towards her, my other block mates went around to see what had happened and went to the crime scene. Guess what? The freaking monster went back and took the kitten away.

So, after what had happened, my block mates and I had been very careful of any sounds the cat made and this week, on Wednesday, another kitten was badly injured. I heard another weird sound coming out from my room and quickly checked it out, and it was literally in front of my room, hugging, more of choking the kitten in the small drain.

Fortunately, when I went to see it, the musang ran and my other block mates saw it, helped me. I couldn't do anything when the kitten was shaking as if it was experiencing seizure in the drain, so one of my block mates, took it out of the drain and laid it on the ground, while the other went to shoo the monster, as well as making sure it doesn't come back.

The kitten was so bloody, like it was really bloody and it was heavily gasping for air. We tried to stop the bleeding, not me tho. I was scared. Then, we waited for quite a long time because we thought the kitten was going to die soon, there were three bite marks on the kitten's head on both side. So, we can't tilt the head left or right because the bleeding just won't stop. We waited for three hours and the kitten was still alive, so then, we all decided to call the cat club.

Apparently, the club wasn't that useful. After hours and hours of waiting, they weren't that reliable much. So, we took the matter in our own hands and brought it to my room to nurse it. Some of us were busy rotating around the block, guarding all the four openings from the musang. It stayed on top of the roof, at the pipe, watching for opportunities to strike back. Curse that MONSTER!

We came out with a theory that the musang knew that there's kitten there, so they were just waiting for the right moment to attack.

The thing about this kitten is that, she thinks that she can move after laying down, surviving all the blood loss. We literally pressured tissue on the head, trying to stop it but it still ineffective. We used two packets of 50 or maybe 100 tissues in a packet.

Anyways, it was already around 2 in the morning and we all, most of us were not asleep yet. Around 3.30, my roommate got help from someone who offered to bring the kitten to the vet but the guards didn't let us go. So, he had to nurse the wound himself, getting iodine and bandages from the university clinic.

It took us a long time to do this because the kitten was struggling to be released. The wounds were deep because you can see the skull of the kitten. Like I said, we really had to hold the kitten so that it won't move because once it has enough energy restored, it will beserk to be released and it has to be two people to hold it when it moved.

We finished nursing it at around 4.30 in the morning but it moved, so the bandage came off. So we bandaged it another two times because somehow it managed to come off once it went frenzy to move and walk.  We tied it up, hoping it would solve the problem.

I really don't know how it happened, but it managed to release itself from the ribbons and walked towards the wall, reacting to the mother meowing, calling the only healthy kitten left. Speaking of that, we managed to trap the only healthy kitten in my room but it was so scared of human, I bet it almost poop out of fear of humans. So, the mother kept on meowing calling the healthy one and literally ignore the sick one.

I was so pissed although I shouldn't be but the sick kitten was searching for the mother and she didn't even want to get close to it. Anyways, the three of us (the only ones left awake), managed to catch some sleep for probably 30 minutes before a loud thud was heard, the kitten hit its' head and went walking on our suitcases, dragging its' head along the wall, so our wall has blood, a lot of it.

We let the healthy kitten out before we slept and gambled the risk of it, knowing the musang was still out there lurking. The thing is, we wanted to let it be in the room but the mother's meow wasn't helping the injured kitten. It was really difficult bandaging the small head of a kitten when it won't stop squirming. All three of us had to hold it.

I woke up around 6.30 in the morning, roughly still 30 minutes of sleep since I had to be wary of the kitten's condition. I called the cat club again because they promised to bring the kitten to the vet. I called them at 730 am, after applying pressure and removing blood from the kitten. But, they didn't freaking answer the phone and I called for more than 10 times. I called my friend instead to help me with the kitten cause the others had morning class and mine was a little bit later than others.

Thank god my friend is good with cat including injured ones. She helped me a lot since I can't really think straight from the lack of sleep. Finally, the rescue team of the club whatsapped me but she told me she will come at 10. I was so pissed and insisted her to come early, she offered 830 and I agreed. I mean, the kitten has loss a lot of blood, how long can you think it can survived? It survived the whole long night already and I was sure it wasn't going to be as strong as it was.

There were a lot of problem with the team so we decided to rent a car (my roommate did) and brought along the girl from the club to direct us to the vet which opened later than the opening hours stated. The kitten is in ward now, the veterinarian told us that it was medium to severely injured, anemic so, it will be warded. We are just waiting to be contacted by the vet now.

Will update more on the kitten!
